Schools

Orono Schools

The Orono Public School District (278) is organized into four schools on a 120-acre central campus serving all or part of the following Western Minneapolis suburbs: Independence, Long Lake, Maple Plain, Medina, Minnetonka Beach and Orono. The district also welcomes students from other communities through Minnesota’s public school choice option, also known as open enrollment.

The district’s vibrant Community Education program serves students and families through Orono Early Learning, Preschool, Spartan Kids school age child care, a robust summer program, and a myriad of engaging classes and recreation opportunities for children and adults of all ages.

The District serves approximately 2,830 students K-12 and is well known for its rigorous core curriculum, personalized learning, and focus on strong relationships and character education. This holistic approach leads to student success and, ultimately, preparation for college and career. Staff resources and training are also devoted to students’ developmental, social and emotional needs.

Facilities

The central campus is also home to the Orono Activities Center, opened in 2019, with paid memberships available. The district also maintains a swimming pool, Orono Ice Arena, and the Oliver Grieb Abbott Environmental Learning Center, which includes the Orono Rotary Learning Pavilion for outdoor science and environmental education classes.

Pesonen stadium, multiple tennis courts, four campus gymnasiums, two auditoriums and ample fields for football, soccer, baseball, softball and other outdoor activities provide the setting for athletic and academic co-curricular activities.

The Orono Discovery Center, on an auxiliary campus in Maple Plain, is home to the Orono Early Learning and Preschool programs as well as a wide variety of Community Education programming.
